A Journey from Diagnosis to Celebration
Angel Horn’s life took a dramatic turn when her son, Willie, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Like many parents, hearing the diagnosis brought an overwhelming wave of emotions, but Angel transformed her shock into determination. “In that moment, I went numb,” she shared, recalling that day. However, rather than dwelling on uncertainty, she chose to educate herself, setting off on a journey of understanding autism and its complexities.
Creating a Community of Support
In the wake of her son’s diagnosis, Horn co-founded Piece by Peace Child Development Research Services, an initiative dedicated to bridging the gap between families and essential resources for autism. “I wanted to let families know they're not in this alone,” she stated emphatically. Through active engagement, she has connected with over 30 families in the Tulsa area, fostering a support network that thrives on shared experiences and understanding. In this space, parents can share stories, resources, and strategies for navigating the challenges of raising a child on the spectrum.
Launching an Autism Christmas Party
This holiday season, Horn is determined to create a joyful, inclusive environment for children with autism through an inaugural Christmas party. Scheduled for December 13 at the Reed Park Community Center, this event aims to provide a sensory-friendly experience where every child on the spectrum can feel accepted. “We want to celebrate them,” Horn expressed, emphasizing the importance of making children feel welcome and free of judgment during festive gatherings.
The Importance of Sensory-Friendly Toys
To ensure that every child receives the kind of gifts that cater to their unique sensory needs, Horn has organized a toy drive, advocating for donations of sensory-specific toys such as pop-its, fidgets, slime, and squishies. “They don’t get invited to a lot of things, so every toy will add to their joy and make them feel included this Christmas,” she said. By filling the room with thoughtful gifts, Horn hopes to cultivate an atmosphere of joy and acceptance where children can truly enjoy themselves.
Embracing the Learning Journey
Horn’s proactive approach sheds light on a significant issue within autism circles: the importance of community and education in overcoming feelings of isolation. The journey of autism can often feel lonely for parents, but Horn’s work exemplifies how knowledge and connection can transform that experience. From effective communication aids to identifying autism behavior signs, Horn ensures families have access to vital information and resources necessary for navigating the autism landscape.
A Call to Action
As the community rallies to support Horn’s vision, this Christmas party stands not just as an event, but as a significant call to action. Residents are encouraged to donate unwrapped toys, helping to make the event magical for kids and sending a powerful message of inclusion and acceptance to those affected by autism. “Each time families come together, we break down barriers,” Horn said, reminding everyone of the crucial role they can play in fostering community connections.
Building a Legacy of Support
Horn's story serves as an invitation to all: to participate, educate, and support initiatives that advocate for autism awareness. This new holiday tradition isn’t just a celebration; it's a step towards a more inclusive world where children with autism can thrive. As Horn beautifully summed it up, “You’re not in this alone.” Together, we can build a community that embraces differences and champions love, understanding, and acceptance for every child.
