Building Hope for Youth with Autism in Sibu
The Sibu Autistic Association (SAA) is on a noble mission to raise funds for a new training center dedicated to youth with autism. With a goal of RM6.5 million for the construction, they have thus far only raised RM700,000, including a significant contribution of RM200,000 from the Lee Foundation States of Malaya. "The funds we currently have are far from sufficient. But I will not give up," stated SAA Chairman David Ngu, expressing both determination and concern.
A Dedicated Space for Growing Needs
The new facility, located on Jalan Alan, is designed to support autistic youth beyond the age of 12, addressing a pressing gap in the current services available, which focus primarily on children. The aim is to provide vocational training in essential life skills like agriculture and food preparation. As Ngu emphasizes, this training is crucial for fostering independence among these young adults.
Community Paving the Way for Change
Encouragingly, local support is on the rise. Sarawak's Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Michael Tiang, has pledged RM500,000 to aid in basic infrastructure, ensuring that access roads and drainage systems are in place to facilitate the new center. He noted, "These children with autism are now young adults and require a dedicated space where they can learn to become independent. This building is crucial for their future." Their collective effort resonates deeply within the community, fostering hope for a brighter future for autistic individuals.
Progress and Future Plans
Construction is ahead of schedule, and if things continue at this pace, SAA anticipates that the building could be ready well before the initial projected date of May 2026. A roof-topping ceremony is planned for August 18, further igniting community interest and support.
