Rising Concerns Over Cuts to Vital Federal Programs
In a landscape marked by uncertainty, non-profit organizations like the ARC of Bay County are becoming increasingly alarmed about the potential cuts to federal safety nets such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Annette Jeske, director of the ARC, highlighted the pressing needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, stating, "People are struggling. And especially as things at the federal level become more complicated."
Impact of Inflation on Vulnerable Populations
With the cost of living escalating, many clients of the ARC are feeling the financial strain. Charles Bowman, a client at the ARC, expressed his concerns: "Inflation, it gets you. And if it wasn't for the ARC, where would people like us be?" Clients often rely on supplemental security income, amounting to just $964 a month, which leaves little room for unexpected expenses. This highlights the precarious situation many find themselves in as additional financial support seems increasingly unreachable.
Growing Need for Support Services
As the demands for assistance from these vulnerable demographics deepen, the ARC has been proactive in addressing the needs. Whether through organizational rep payee services or providing essential resources like food and medicine, organizations like the ARC act as a vital lifeline. However, as Jeske noted, the previously robust support systems seem to be worsening. "We no longer have a nice, robust system of support," she remarked, offering a sobering perspective on the current landscape.
Join the Fight for Sustaining Essential Services
In response to these growing challenges, the ARC of Bay County is holding a fundraising event titled “An Evening of Music and Art”. Scheduled for April 24 at Bay City’s State Theatre from 6 to 9 p.m., the event aims to rally community support to sustain these essential services. By attending or contributing, community members can play a role in preserving the fabric of assistance that so many depend on.
With the potential for cuts to vital programs looming on the horizon, it is more important than ever to stay informed and engaged.
