An Innovative Community Fundraiser for Alzheimer's Awareness
On Saturday, September 13, the Cape Girardeau community is coming together for the annual Cape for a Cure event, aimed at raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Elks Lodge, this gathering promises an afternoon filled with live music from Pastor Bob Lenz, a variety of food trucks, games, and a silent auction, all in support of a critical cause.
A Focus on Early Detection and Empowerment
One of the key elements of the event is the showcase at 5:30 p.m., highlighting new advancements in technology and testing for caregivers. Family nurse practitioner Preston Holifield emphasizes the importance of early detection in managing Alzheimer’s disease. “We have something that empowers us to help identify this disease, minimizing the burden not only for patients but also for caregivers,” Holifield explains.
This initiative aligns with insights from health professionals, showcasing innovations such as artificial intelligence tools and the C2N Precivity blood test, which helps measure blood protein ratios to assess cognitive health risks. “This diagnostic test allows us to reassess individuals who may feel at risk for cognitive decline, enabling better health management,” Holifield notes.
Community Impact and Support for Caregivers
The event is designed to engage the entire community, acknowledging that the burden of caregiving extends beyond patients themselves. “Care does not stop at the patient; it touches families and health providers,” stresses Holifield, underlining the need for collective support.
Additionally, Maddie Erwin from the Alzheimer’s Association highlights that this event is a part of a larger initiative, leading up to the Walk to End Alzheimer’s on October 11. “We have many fantastic groups joining us, contributing to a fun and impactful event,” she adds.
Valuable Resources for Caregivers
The significance of events like Cape for a Cure goes beyond fundraising; it also fosters a sense of community and provides essential information for caregivers. Various resources and support services are available to assist those involved in caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s, such as senior care solutions, cognitive care facilities, and emotional support groups. Knowledge sharing at such events can lead to improved care strategies.
Looking Forward: Join the Fight Against Alzheimer’s
Every contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association through events like Cape for a Cure directly influences ongoing research and support networks for Alzheimer's patients and their families. Participation in community events not only raises awareness but also provides vital funding for the advancement of care practices.
As we look toward the future, it’s essential for the community to come together, not only for Cape for a Cure but also for the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s.
